Arethusa Canyon ~ 11 December 2005

Party: Jiri Svec, Jacqui Knox, James Bevan

the canyon begins

The belay was around a natural arch to the right of the main falls. We scrambled down into the sinkhole below and abseiled through the hole on the left.

After a long creek walk, we were all glad to be in the canyon. The atmosphere inside was tremendous. Light poured in and lit up the canyon walls and the spray from the waterfall.

Arethusa is more spectacular and difficult version of Grand Canyon. They're both very wide and open. However the abseils and the scrambling in arethusa are a just a bit more exciting.

We climbed up to the cliffline and followed it back to the Rodriguez Pass track.

A favourite campsite

Then we walked up past beauchamp falls and followed the Picher track back to the airfield. There were some nice flowers on the walk out.
